- Bacteria need cell wall to maintain it's structure
- Peptidoglycan is made from N-acetylglucosamine and N-acetylemuramic acid
- An oligopeptide is attached to N-acetylemuramic acid and they cross link each other to make a mesh which make the cell wall
- Transpeptidase / penicillin-binding protein catalyze the cross link reaction
- Penicillin binds irreversibly to transpeptidase
- Bacteria could not make cell wall
- Bacteria burst and die due to osmotic force (water moves in)
