- an infectious disease of birds and mammals caused by RNA viruses of the family Orthomyxoviridae
Types of influenza virus, the five genera of Orthomyxoviridae
Influenzavirus A
- one species, influenza A virus
- host range : humans, pig, horse, birds, marine mammals
Influenzavirus B
- has one species, influenza B virus
- host range : human only
Influenzavirus C
- one species, influenza C virus
- host range : humans and pig
Isavirus
- has one species, infectious salmon anemia virus (ISAV)
- infect fish, cause severe anemia
Thogotovirus
- a group of unclassified viruses that are similar to the Orthoviruses and share some amino acid homology
Parainfluenza
- viruses of the genus Paramyxovirus, four types
Type 1 (hemadsorption virus type 2),
- causes acute laryngotracheitis in children and occasionally adults
Type 2 (croup-associated virus)
- causes acute laryngotracheitis or croup in young children
- causes minor upper respiratory infections in adults
Type 3 (hemadsorption virus type 1; shipping fever virus)
- causes with pharyngitis, bronchiolitis, and pneumonia in small children
- causes occasional respiratory infection in adults
Type 4
